Dr. Noel F. Smyth is Professor of Nonlinear Waves in the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh. His research is in the general area of nonlinear waves, with applications to nonlinear optics, water waves, oceanography and meteorology. He has published 118 papers in refereed journals 4 book chapters and has had 4 research grants from the EPSRC, 2 from the Australian Research Council, 5 from the Royal Society, 1 from the London Mathematical Society, 1 from NATO, 1 from the Department of Education and Training (Australia) and 1 from Saudi Arabia. He is a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College and a research assessor for the Carnegie Trust. Of direct relevance to this proposal he has lead the development of undular bore theory and its application to fluid mechanics and nonlinear optics. Some of this research has involved the direct modelling of experiments and observational data for undular bores. Prof. Smyth is one of the organisers of the conference series Nonlinear Guided Waves which has been running since 2008 and which covers the area of this proposal. Prof. Smyth was an invited speaker at the DSW meeting at SISSA in Trieste in 2012. Prof. Smyth was made a Senior Member of the Optical Society of America in 2011 in recognition of his research in optics. He is a visiting professor at the University of Wollongong (Australia) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Prof. Smyth has a track record of collaborating with the other PI and CIs, having 3 publications with Dr. El, 27 with Prof. Assanto and 4 with Prof. Grimshaw.
